Indigenous Communities Officer

The Indigenous Communities Officer will be responsible for and oversee all grantmaking and partnership-building for our Indigenous Food Justice for Youth programmatic area.

This is an exciting time to join Newman’s Own Foundation. The Foundation has worked since 1996 with a number of Indigenous-led social impact organizations working to support nutrition, justice, and opportunity for Indigenous communities youth in the US. In 2022, along with a new, more focused mission, “to nourish and transform the lives of children who face adversity,” we prioritized three programmatic areas: Indigenous Food Justice for Youth, Nutritious Food in Schools, and Joyful Experiences for Children with Serious Illnesses. We are now building a team to implement this new focus, with a renewed commitment to our legacy of impact and innovation. The Indigenous Communities Officer is a new position and reflective of our commitment to Indigenous communities and our grantee partners.

Previous experience working with Indigenous communities essential, with knowledge of nutrition and/or food justice desirable.

Newman’s Own Foundation’s model—originally conceived 40 years ago when Paul Newman started selling salad dressing and wanted to ‘give it all away’—remains unique and innovative compared to other foundations, corporations, and social impact organizations. Newman’s Own Foundation owns Newman’s Own, Inc., a food company, and 100% of the royalties and profits of the food company, along with license fees from third parties, go to the Foundation. The Foundation then grants out these funds to nonprofit social impact organizations in service of our mission.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Build, manage, maintain, and oversee close relationships and partnership development with current and potential Indigenous communities grantee partners, as well as with funding and strategic partners and other key stakeholders who can support our grantees to advance their work and impact
• Manage and oversee grantmaking process for potential and current grantees, including application, selection, due diligence, grant disbursement, support, renewals, results management, and learning, all the while using best in class, open, transparent, fair, mutually accountable, and impact-oriented processes. The Officer will be supported by and work alongside additional Foundation team members and consultants, including the Results Management Officer, the Grants Manager and the Finance team
• Support Chief Partnership and Program Officer and communications function of Newman’s Own Foundation with thought leadership and other materials as needed, as regards Indigenous communities work, which might include attending, moderating, and speaking at conferences, contributing to op-eds and the Foundation newsletter, and showcasing our grantees on communications and marketing materials.

Minimum Qualifications & Skills

• 5+ years of experience, including at least 3+ years working on Indigenous communities. Additional experience in the social impact sector, whether at a foundation, corporation, government entity, or nonprofit are preferred
• Demonstrated experience working with and within Indigenous communities, with excellent knowledge of, sensitivity to, and respect for Indigenous innovation, cultures, and ancestral knowledge systems
• 2+ years of partnership-development and relationship-building skills within the social impact space,
• Excellent presentation skills, including use of Excel, PowerPoint, and Word to prepare and present presentations for meetings, convenings, and conferences
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Good working knowledge of issues relating to Indigenous communities in the US, with preference as regards our programmatic area of Indigenous Food Justice for Youth
• Four-year degree required in related field. Masters level or advanced degree in related field a plus

Desired Knowledge & Abilities

• Working across the social impact community to drive multi-stakeholder partnerships despite existing status quo and bureaucracies
• Designing, overseeing, and managing advisory board, convening, and partnerships, building strategy to support grantees with co-funding and partnerships
• Good working knowledge of CRM/donor and grantee management database systems, such as Salesforce and Cybergrants

Travel

• Flexible remote or hybrid, with willingness to travel up to 4 times a year to Westport, CT, if needed, to meet with Newman’s Own Foundation team members, Newman’s Own, Inc., employees, and other stakeholders
• 15-25% to meet with grantee partners and potential co-funders/partners, participate in conferences and convenings with good flexibility to determine own schedule (% does not count travel to Westport, CT, if not within commuting distance)

Salary Range

In line with applicable laws, and in consideration of equitable practices, we are sharing the salary range for this position as $80,000-120,000. This range was determined against available benchmarks. This represents the present low and high ends of the Foundation’s pay range for this position. Actual pay is based on several job-related factors, including skills, education, training, credentials, experience, scope and complexity of role responsibilities, geographic location, performance, and working conditions.
